The Charleston SC Metro Region was ranked number 7 by Forbes Magazine for job growth in Mid-Size cities in the USA. Forbes used statistics from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics to evaluate 421 markets for recent, mid-term and long-term growth economic and employment prospects.
While many people relocating to Charleston are coming for retirement, the wonderful climate or because of our rankings in magazines, many don't realize that Charleston ranks just behind Austin Texas as one of the top job markets for software / tech jobs. Charleston's Digital Corridor includes many growing companies like Blackbaud and Benefit Focus on Daniel Island, Spawar, SPARC, google, People Matter and more. Adding to our regions growth include jobs in the aerospace industry with Boeing's Charleston plant which is now drawing in many subsuppliers, Mercedes Benz's new truck plant, the recently announced Volvo car plant and the significant growth related to the Charleston Port expansion.
The US Army Corp of Engineers and the State of South Carolina are spending millions to deepen the harbor to accomodate new super cargo ships that will be using the soon to open new Panama Cana locks. To handle the volume, the State Ports Authority is adding a new harbor shipping terminal, new rail lines to handle containters and many companies are adding or expanding distribution centers.
